Fun Things to see and do in Minneapolis

There’s never a dull moment in Minneapolis, where shops, restaurants, and highly regarded cultural and sports venues are a wellspring of downtime options. That’s not even mentioning the Mini Apple’s scenic beauty and its natural attractions.

Here are some fun things to do in the city:

  1. Admire paintings at the Minneapolis Institute of Art
The Minneapolis Institute of Art, or Mia, boasts an extensive collection of paintings, sculpture, and 40,000-year-old artifacts. Masterpieces from Monet and Matisse can also be viewed here. Explore the galleries or go on a guided tour to make the most of your visit. Attend lectures and classes, and connect with people who share your passion for art.

Sit down for a lovely meal or a cup of coffee at Agra Culture Kitchen & Press, the Mia’s on-site restaurant. Shop for art books, exhibit-related publications, monographs, and other merchandise at The Store at Mia.

  2. Take photos at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Quirky, colorful, and larger-than-life sculptures await at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Don’t forget your camera – thousands of memorable selfies have been taken on the grounds. Keep an eye out for “Spoonbridge and Cherry,” the park’s centerpiece and undoubtedly one of the most iconic works of art that can be found here.

Go on a leisurely stroll and admire the exquisite flower gardens. The greenhouse is another must-see, especially for those looking for some gardening inspiration.

  3. Catch a live performance at the Guthrie Theater
Fantastic performances and glossy productions from local and international talent will keep you in your seat, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to socialize before and after the shows. The theater stages a mix of classic and contemporary plays. Previous shows include “King Lear” and “My Fair Lady.”

The building itself is a sight to behold, and there’s much to see behind the scenes. Go on a backstage tour of the theater in-between plays and discover how the production crew works.

  4. Watch a game at Target Field
Sports fans will love this well-regarded ballpark. Exciting baseball games, great seats, and an amazing food selection from concessionaires and restaurants make Target Field one of the city’s top attractions. Bring the whole family and cheer for the Minnesota Twins, the professional baseball team that calls Minneapolis home.

The open-air lets you enjoy the weather when it’s sunny, and the stadium’s layout is conducive to walking and wandering about. A number of live concerts also take place here throughout the year.

  5. Explore Minehaha Regional Park
This park features limestone bluffs that overlook a meandering river and a 53-foot falls that will take your breath away. Visit the Longfellow House Hospitality Center, a replica of the home of the New England poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who wrote about Minehaha Falls in the poem “Song of Hiawatha.”

Paved trails allow you to explore the park on foot or by bike. There are several picnic areas and a picnic shelter where you can roll out a blanket and spend a chill afternoon with friends and family.

  6. Unwind at the Chain of Lakes Regional Park
Part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway, Chain of Lakes is the most celebrated destination in Minneapolis’ impressive park system. It winds along the shorelines of Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet, Lake of Isles, Brownie Lake, and Cedar Lake. It also encompasses the scenic trails that link these areas to Lyndale Park.

Admire the gleaming surface of a lake as you stroll along the shoreline. Go biking or rent a canoe. The park is close to Uptown, where a number of trendy restaurants can be found.
